Five Questions Friday with Bri from Best Friends Forever!

I can’t think of a better way to inaugurate Five Questions Friday here on Reveille than one with an awesome representative from one of my favorite locals bands to answer my always slightly-weird, but typically informative questions… Enjoy and have a great weekend! (more…)

Make A Pilgrimage

On Sunday, Minneapolis music legends Suicide Commandos play the State Fair Grandstand with Fountains Of Wayne. I try not to tell anyone what to do for the most part, but you need to go see this. You should be as excited about this as being able to see The Replacements or Prince for free. Yes, I’m serious.

Maybe I get too excited about stuff like this sometimes. I am always interested in where things started, how everything came to be, and Suicide Commandos had a major impact on how the music scene took shape in the ’80s and they answer the question “Where did it come from?”. Jim Walsh recently interviewed Steve Almaas here, if you need more convincing. And if you need more than that, well, I can’t go door to door and threaten you all into going, as much as I’d like to.

Buying Habits
Tuesday August 21st 2007, 5:56 pm by: Pat O'Brien

When I go record (well, CD) shopping, sometimes I have a vague list in my head, but often I head somewhere–usually Cheapo I suppose–and will spend a ridiculous amount of time in the used CDs, just looking to see what I can find. Sometimes I don’t come across anything (there’s often a reason many of those CDs are there) but usually I find at least two albums that I have either had at one time and lost, thus requiring me to replace them at a reduced cost (I’m not sure why I can’t pay full price for an album twice, but I seem to have some sort of moral opposition to it.) or an album I have heard of/about and am confident I will like (exceptions being Roll On from The Living End some years back and Get Saved from Pilot to Gunner, which I actually still have somewhere–both were terrible.) I guess what I’m getting at is: am I the only person who shops for music without an agenda, at least some of the time? Do you always have something in mind and quickly leave if you cannot find it? I’m curious because as much as I talk about music, I hardly ever find myself in a discussion about people’s music buying habits. Is it too personal to discuss?

Sound Unseen 2007 starts tomorrow!

Taken from their website…

Sound Unseen is a festival for music lovers which is based in Mpls and now tours the world. Music documentaries, rare concert footage, and interactive cinema is showcased alongside live music from new bands and musicians who we think will make an impact. We’re also well-known for our one-of-a-kind parties and events (we are not hyping here), great people and an experience which no other festival can touch. We love it, and hopefully you will too.

How can you go wrong? I love movies and I love music - I bet you do as well…

It kicks off tomorrow with the Rick Fuller-produced, Twin/Tone recorded “7 Nights in the Entry” at the Riverview Theater for seven bucks at 7pm. This is some choice 1981 stuff, kids - with footage of Minneapolis heavies like Husker Du and The Replacements. Very Exciting.
